Eighty years after a smallpox pandemic decimated the global population, Jacen Chester finds himself the sole survivor of his tiny community, just outside the ruins of Philadelphia. Out of the ashes of the old civilization he determines to build a new one.

The young man encounters Hakim, a wanderer with a mysterious past, who begins to teach him the arts of leadership, self-defense, and the history of the recent global disaster. Together they gather a small group of people committed to Jacen's vision of the future.

The endeavor is threatened from within by Jacen and Hakim’s own sharp disagreements, and from without by ruthless groups having a decidedly different view of the future. The two men must grapple with philosophical differences regarding violence and religious tolerance in a world where the margin of survival doesn’t permit mistakes. When catastrophe strikes the growing community, Jacen’s leadership is put to the test.

Outlander Chronicles Phoenix eBook C H Cobb

I loved reading this book and I can't wait for more of the story! It gave me so much to think about, which I love in a book, and it was a exciting read, too! It raised ideas I had never thought about before, as well as presenting familiar ones in a new way. Cobb is very effective at evoking a world that is both radically different from our own, and also not so distant in possibility. I suppose all post-apocalyptic stories are critiques of our own society, and the author's point of view is evident throughout. At the beginning I thought it might get heavy-handed, but it never did. Althogh I disagree with most of Cobb's views as I ascertain them from the story, I really enjoyed the debates and discussions the characters have, which I think says a lot about Cobb's talent as a writer as well as his even-handedness as a thinker. When I saw that Muslims would be part of the story, I was ready to be offended/annoyed, but I actually appreciated the way Cobb crafted the characters and the story as a whole. Bring out a sequel, please!!!

Outlander Chronicles Phoenix eBook C H Cobb Reviews

I have found my new go to author! If he writes it I am going to read it, his writing is filled with adventure and Every emotion, the truth is told here as well and in such a clear and understandable way! GREAT characters that you will fall in love with I hope the sequel will happen soon!
I've read numerous other works by C.H. Cobb (namely his "Falcon" series) and have enjoyed his writing immensely. I can without reservation (and hopefully without minimizing his other titles) say that this book and hopefully series is the best! Cobb has a wonderful way of weaving truths into the narrative without coming off preachy. This is indeed a book for today and I can't recommend enough!
Intriguing. Well described battle strategies. Evangelism well integrated into story.
I don't really know where to start. This book is packed with everything from action to drama to deep thoughts of the purpose of man. It is a sober warning of what happens when civilization loses sight of what really matters, but is filled with the hope of a small group returning to Truth and genuine purpose. Wonderful characters who come alive on the pages. You will laugh, cheer, ponder, and perhaps shed a tear or two. Can't wait for the next book!
Honestly, this is a very good book. Lots of action for those who like the edge-of-the-seat motif. I was very impressed with the research side of Mr. Cobb's work. If one is going to place a people in a future world which has been destroyed then one must ask what resources would still be at their disposal? What lessons, or skills must be learned or relearned (map reading, horse training)? How would civilization progress or digress? A good story line can be completely negated by lazy research. As for the discussion on philosophy eluded to by an earlier review, it was tastefully done and necessary to the plot line. The actions of each of the main characters is driven by their core beliefs. That being the case the author must reveal what those beliefs are and how they will or have affected civilization and how opposing beliefs, even unstated, would affect the effort to re-civilize society.

It has it all love interests, tragic backgrounds, future hope and struggles between men and against nature.

An excellent work, and I wait anxiously, for the sequel.
I could only give this 4 stars because I am the only 5 star writer I know (I wish).

This is the fourth book by C.H. Cobb that I've read, after having finished the Falcon series, and I must say that I find this book one of his best yet! This fictional story, set in a post apocalyptic world in the heart of America, at times almost seems like it could one day be prophecy fulfilled. Throughout the story we're given glimpses back in time to how the characters of the story, and more importantly their current world circumstances, have come about and there are portions of the narrative that are eerily familiar to our current world events that if played out right could bring about a worldwide epidemic unlike anything since the great flood. I highly recommend reading this and cannot wait for the books in the series that will follow. Well done C.H. Cobb!
